Ghost Town Trail

Sun, June 11, 2023, 1:00 – 5:00 pm

Description

We will cut down Japanese knotweed in the six-mile section between Dilltown and Heshbon. Our goal is to eliminate 22 smaller, easily accessible infestations so that they don't spread. These small infestations are surrounded by native plants that will fill in once we eliminate the knotweed. The 11 largest or inaccessible infestations would best be handled by professional crews, so Plant Patrol will not treat them. If we get enough volunteers, we will finish well before 5:00.

Our protocol is a two-step process. We cut the knotweed to the ground in June. At least six weeks later we return and spray the resprouted knotweed, which will only be one or two feet tall, with glyphosate herbicide. That late in the growing season, the plants' nutrients will be flowing back into its roots. The herbicide will be drawn into the knotweed roots and kill the plants.

We will be carrying our cutting tools along the trail by foot and by bicycle. Bring your own bicycle if you wish to travel by bike. If you have a tool for cutting sturdy weeds, then please bring it. String trimmers cannot cut through knotweed stems.

We will start from the Heshbon trail head at 1:00. You can get driving directions by entering the address 60 Wagner Dr, Blairsville, PA 15717 into your GPS system or Google Maps.

Later we will email more logistical details to volunteers who have registered to participate in this work event or who have directly emailed us to tell us that they are participating. Contact volunteers@plantpatrol.org if you have any questions or if you wish to volunteer without registering on the Web site.
